Rimmel I am impressed

I am notorious for losing eyeliners and in this week alone I have surpassed my all time record with in as many weeks. So in sheer desperation I hopped into a chemist today to get another one. This time to be stored in my handbag in the vain hope of being able to use it more than twice.

Now I have noticed something recently and that is rimmel stands in little independent chemists sell products at less than big chains like Superdrug and Boots. Today was no exception I got a Scandaleyes waterproof kohl for £2.99 £2 off the RRP. I know it was more a purchase of desperation, but as readers of my blog will know I am fussy over my eyeliners.

Well I happily can report this is one of the softest kohls I have had the benefit of using in years. OK it is not perfect for thin lines that pens can achieve, but for the light smudge line I like to give my eyes some shape and definition, it is perfect. I am so impressed I am seriously considering nipping back and buying a few more for when I lose this one, which will happen at some point.

I can also happily report it didn't make my eyes water or any of the redness that I can suffer from on harsher pencils. It also stayed put all day yet came off with a baby wipe when I went to bed. SO it ticks all my boxes. My I suggest if you like this kind of eyeliner head towards your nearest independent chemist with a rimmel stand for it as even on the 3 4 2 offer at Superdrug it is still more expensive there.

Brief Blog

Sorry for the two day silence, but as tomorrows blog will tell I have had a very busy day today. I was at MotorCycleLive 2012 at the Birmingham NEC.

This involved an early night last night and a stupidly early start this morning. So as I so very tired I will do the full report tomorrow, when my brain is firing on all cylinders. At the moment it is misfiring every other stroke.

In the meantime can I ask you all spare a thought and or prayer for everyone in the UK badly affected by the terrible floods that are striking all over the country. There will be families this year who have lost their houses or even family members this festive season.

We all know winters can be hard, but no one expected it to be this hard to start with. To lose anything to the natural elements is bad enough, but for families with children, or the elderly far from family, it will make it even harder. I for one will be praying that there is some comfort for them all, and for those who have lost a loved one, I hope they find some peace.

A matter of common sense

I promised not to blog about my health issues until til my physio date unless there was something important to blog about. Well in the last few dates I have reason to not only blog but scream with total frustration.

As you may have read I have been recognised as disabled and awarded a benefit to enable me to get out and about a bit more. But there is another benefit I am on called ESA, it's a bit like job seekers but for those unable to work. Well they have a rule that if you claim this after 13 weeks you are liable to attend a medical dependant on the form you have to fill in. My form arrived mid September where I clearly labelled I was in the process of having scans and wouldn't know the result.

It was for this reason I didn't get a verdict on my DLA until this month as they had the sense to wait for those reports. The ESA department decided that they need to do their own medical to see if I can go to work regardless of the fact the consultant has already stated I won't be fit to do anything work related until I have had my Physio assessment and then their structure of physio put in place. Only then will we know what is permanent damage, and what is treatable. So the ESA department have decided to arrange me a medical a week after the assessment and before I will have started treatment.

The reason behind all this is because the medical decides my fate, if they say I am fit for work, even limited work, I get moved back to JSA and have to find some one who will employ me, who is unable to even carry a handbag to work or a cup of coffee from one room to another. Or if that is the decision I can appeal it and remain on the basic level of benefit until they review this. I have heard of people being on their 3rd or 4th appeal to get the matter sorted. If they do rule in my favour I am put in one of two channels, I get a higher level of benefit providing I attend return to work workshops , or the other road is they accept I am crippled at the moment, increase my benefit and leave me alone.

The problem with all this is, I have cancel any medical appointment if it clashes with any appointment or workshop the DHSS issue. Anyone with any sense know trying to get an appointment with Physios and Specialists is like finding the holy grail, and you can't just decide when you want them. In some cases failure to attend gets you sent back to square one and you have to start the referral system again. But the DHSS have decided that their workshops and interviews are priority over this. I know some of this is to prevent fraud etc, but a little commonsense is required here.

Why do I need to go to a medical and probably poked and jabbed in places in my back even my consultant wont touch with out the scan pictures in front of him. When a simple letter from a GP, Consultant and Physio could spell it out. Yes a doctor could be subject to a little vagueness in a report , but when 3 different specialists and medically trained people are saying the same thing, and there are scan pictures to prove this findings. Why does some generally trained doctor have the right to overthrow and question a specialists findings?

What ever the whinging I am still stuck being forced to attend a medical that is physically making me sick at the idea of attending, it is non optional and that's the end of it. However I do wonder where the common sense is in all this, and I am stuck wasting tax payers money to prove, something that has already been established. What is worse I am could be put in the situation of being mis judged and either joining the masses of unemployed and having to attend interviews at the job centre I can even get to as there is no lift, or wasting more tax money appealing against the judgement to prove the already prov en point. This whole system has gone mad, I have already got through the highest stage of disability benefit yet may get stuck at the middle level.

I seriously think that the people who make this system and judge on certain parts of it are straight out of Alice in wonderland, they have certainly been eating the caterpillars mushrooms.

Latest in beauty oct/nov

Sorry, I have been slacking on my reviews so I am doing two in one. I recieved a total of 6 samples in the last two  months and to be honest there is a bit of a mixed package.

Oct samples were L'occitane divine cream, which needs little write up as it is a guarented hit with me. The other two were rose based samples. One a face cream the other a body lotion  Neither of which came with a familar name, and to be perfectly honest with probably remain that name. Melvita rose skin duo, looked great. but the effets were equal to that of any supermarket brand and the scent was sickly and overwhelming. The body lotion was by Dr Bragi and yes it did provide execllent softness after application, however I also became a walking airfreshner scented of roses. Everywhere I went the air was left with a lingering scent of roses. Whilst on paper that sounds great, I found it way to much especially as the sample was only enough to o the top of my body, I dread to think what would happen if I had enough to do my entire body.

Novemeber samples included Royal Ballet body conditioner, Japaneseque tinted lip conditioner, and The Sactunary Spa themal face mask. The Royal Ballet Body conditioner good a favourable report from both mum and myself especially on tired achy legs, although I fear the cost may out weigh the benefit as at present I can't find the cost of a full size pot. The Japanesque lip conditioner, was a mmassive let down as it was basically a tiny box of q tips infused with a lip conditioner. I personally get better results from a tinted lip balm from Nivea. The sancutaury Spa themal face mask, however was brillant and I will be buying a bigger pack to get a better report as one trial is never enough to base a life of famdom on. Sanctuaryhowever is like L'Occitane, it is a quality name that matches its products, I have never been let down by their new ranges, as they take time to master the product to the high level they are known from.

So over all it has been a mixed bag of highs and lows, I am sorry if I sound hash on some products but I am not going to lie if I think the product isn't worth the time of day or over priced. This is a great way to try out new products though, as you don't have a high outlay just to be dissapointed.

Jolie Box Yardley sample

As I said yesterday upon receipt of my Jolie box, mum all but fought me for the Yardley daisy sample, and she promised a test and verdict on return.

Now to be fair mum loves most Yardley fragrances, so I was expecting a bias report back. Her love  of lavender and lily of the valley is legendary, but she also likes things like their lace perfumes. So if ever there was going to be a favourable report it would have come from her.

That said this morning mum applied the daisy perfume with high hopes. However ten minutes later I had a very disappointed mother. She described it as very earthy and heavy scented and she really didn't like it. We gave it a few hours as all perfumes develop with wear and skin temperature, and granted a faint floral scent came through, but no where near enough for her liking.

To give it a fair chance I  applied some to myself as perfumes react differently on different people, but unfortunately the result was the same with out the floral undertones on me. So as far as this households is concerned it is not a positive report and Yardley should stick to their tried and tested perfumes. This one is more perfume de allotment rather than daisy.

My 1st beauty box

I took the plunge this month and decided to try out the various beauty boxes on the market, so I subscribed to two on the market for a direct comparison and when Glossy Box sort their payment screen out I will try that as well.

So this month I was expecting a delivery of both The Beauty Box and Jolie Box. Today the Jolie box arrived and what a treat it is. To be perfectly honest unless the other two show up with a gift wrapped gold card or similar, I think I know which one will earn my annual custom.

The Jolie box was well packed with no excess packing  and as only in cardboard it is recyclable. The box itself is classy, sturdy and practical, could easily be recovered for a trinket box. Inside was an original styled bag full of treats. There is a sample menu to explain all the samples and the months theme. It also explains the rewards points available. There is a separate glossy magazine full of interesting articles.

I received in total 7 different items in my Jolie Box.  full size winter lip balm, travel sized cleansing wash, and 3d glitter body lotion. There is also a miniature L'Occitane angelica hydration cream (to those who know me you can imagine the squeal of delight). There was also a vial of Yardley daisy perfume (which mum volunteered to trial a little to eagerly for my liking) . There is also two sachets, one of BB cream and the other is a hand cream.

As I sample these you will get the write ups, but for the moment I am more than happy with this selection and wait to compare the other boxes against this, although I have to admit the bench mark has been set very high.

The reason I opted for doing this was I have for the last couple of months been doing the free samples via Latest In Beauty. Whilst all it cost me is £1.50 per month, the samples were very limited. I do have  couple of write ups for my blog to do on the products, but I do think sending 10 q tips in a tiny plastic carry wallet as one sample is a little bit of a stretch when it was described as portable makeup correction sticks.

Most of these samples I have received are ample enough to give me at least a weeks worth of sample, that is enough to give an honest report and detect any re actions or downsides. For £10 per month plus £2.95 p+p this is more than reasonable.

Something for nothing

Well technically it is the season of giving and MUA has taken this literally. Not only can you get them on a 3 4 2 offer at superdrug, you can get the same deal directly from the MUA only shop. So you can guess what I am doing this weekend ? Yes thats right buying some stocking fillers.

But its not just Superdrug and MUA that are offering you some goodies. Benefit is offering two free travels sizes gifts on sales over £25, Byliss and Harding have 25% of all gifts today only, and Kanee has a flash 50% discount sale that will probably end tonight.

Today and tomorrow are the best times to look on line and shop, but make sure you get something extra for your money. L'Occitane have a couple of deals, a free tot bag if you spend £40 and a goody bag worth £60 for £15 if you spend £35. There is no reason to buy anything this Christmas with getting that little bit extra for yourself as a treat or as an extra gift.

And while you are hunting check out Body Shop, they are giving out Christmas presents when you order on line, mine is 35% of.

Happy shopping everyone

Wireless fraud and scams PLEASE READ AND PASS ON

Sorry for not blogging yesterday, but I was kind of busy sorting out the mess that I am about to warn you of in this blog.

If you use a contact less card, you can lose money out of your account without even taking you car out of you bag let alone out of your purse, as my poor mother found out to the cost of £50. We went shopping twice over the week and fortunately could tell the bank what shops, at what time and amount was spent. Yet whilst we were out and her card was in her handbag some one cloned the card and helped themselves to her money. How you ask, easy, apparently there are such things as remote readers that can gain this information just by brushing past your bag. In a split second your card details are stored and your money is theirs.

Although we are lucky and can prove it wasn't mum who spent that amount, it still has to be processed through the fraud department and the chances of mum seeing her money till 10 working days time is unlikely, as the money has to leave your account first then be tracked, only then can she have it refunded. Then it is likely to become a police matter and more hassle for my poor mum.

In a way we are fortunate they only took £50 and not cleared her account as there was a whole pension on her account at that time. But the bank believe they were going take £50 daily and hope we wouldn't notice till it was too late.

So I have a few tips for everyone else especially in this busy shopping season.

1) If possible request a none contact less card to save the danger of this happening at all.

2) If that is not possible make sure your card is not in a bag, try to sore it as close to your body as possible, but not in back pockets.

3)  Check your balance daily and match it to your receipts, if there is a dubious transaction request the name of the recipient from your bank.

4) If the transaction is still not recognised particularly on cash withdrawal or card purchase ask to be put through to your banks fraud department.

5) Change any old standing PIN numbers any way before your are victim and destroy and record of this number by burning or shredding

6) DO NOT give anyone access to your card or PIN. Not even your partner or close family member.

The reason for point 5 and 6 being, if you don't abide by either of those and the worse happens you are a victim of fraud, you will have no case for a refund as you have exposed yourself to fraud already.

7) May I also recommend that on any shopping trip you make a note of what shops you pop into and at what time. It makes it easier for the bank to confirm your case.

8) I would also only take the cards you really need and maybe a small amount of cash separately.

9) Finally I would keep an emergency amount of cash locked at home in case you are a victim of fraud, that way you still have enough to live on until the matter is resolved and hopefully you are refunded.

Sorry for the formality in this post but I thought it would be wise to pass this on to everyone to help you all.

There is also another big fraud going on regarding the Royal Mail, I wish to alert you to. If you get a card through your door from PDS Parcel Delivery Service, requesting you call regarding delivery of a package and the number reads 09066611911 DO NOT ring it. It is a premium rate number and by just calling it you will get a bill for £315. The company is not a mail company it is a scam based in Belize, and you will be liable for the phone bill. lease take the card and notify either Royal Mail or the Police, they are aware of the scam and are trying to trace the company and stop this.

I request you print this blog and pass it on to everyone and anyone you know as the last thing we want this season is people falling victim to either of these scams.

End of month Freebie alert

Just got a pleasant surprise whilst being dragged round the supermarket. Attached to the front of More magazine ( Price £1.50) was a freebie that made the outlay viable.

Personally I don't really like the magazine but free with it was either one of two gifts models own lip gloss or nail polish. I don't really dig lip gloss as I find most of them tacky on my lips but there was a nude nail polish that I had to try. There is a choice of two colours in both products and I actually managed to steer away from the red. The best way to describe the nude when on the nail is a lighter version of Jermayne Street by Nails Inc.

I have never tried Models Own nail polish before and to be honest I am quite impressed. A single coat gives a god coverage and good sheen. The colour is nice enough, not really a festive colour but a good reserve for normal days.

For the money of a magazine that also gives you a free card for miss selfridge value anything between £1 -£500, it is worth the purchase. Have a look out for the colour you want though. I had to hunt to back of the shelf for the nail polish I wanted and it seemed the nail polish copies were more popular than the lip gloss. If nothing else it would make a good stocking filler.

Mental Metals

'Tis the season to be jolly, and boy has the fashion world taken that to heart. I for one is not complaining, because metals are the easiest style to adapt. So here I go with my best picks.

Starting with your nails Barry M has 3 easy answers for your nails. There is 3 foil colours, gold, which I have and love, silver and light purple, which I am trying to hunt down. The gold has the look of goldfinger in the 60's. A thick heavy coverage as if your nail has has been covered in molten gold. I am itching to try the purple as I think it would bring a quirky twist to any metallic look. At £4.99 max, they are an easy way to copy the look with out breaking the bank.

Lips are more tricky. I have seen alot with the 3D effect on the , and whilst they look fantastic on  the cover of a magazine, I hardly think they are practical at work or even at the Christmas party. The base level is easily achieved with the Flipstick by Max Factor. With this little gem you can tip your hat the metal trend without resembling a cyberman wannabe. I love the folky pink and gypsy red best, but depending on skin tone there is a different colour to suit all. Whats best about it is you can add as much or as little metal by the fact it is a separate part of the lipstick colour. The price is around the £8 mark, but remember this is included on the superdrug 3 4 2 offer so you could get it at a lower price when you use that offer.

For eyes you have a multitude of choices whether or not you are daring. For those who like the bold statements, you can't go far wrong with Barry M's dazzle dust. These have bold pigments and can be used on their own or mixed with other colours to give a metallic edge. There is a range of many different colours for your choice of look.  A pot can go a long way and they are good value for money at around £4 a pot.

I also fell across MUA on a recent trip and was amazed at their prices for the quality. The range starts at as little as £1 for their pearl eye shadows. Which for the colour range available is a good thing as I am tempted to buy a lot of them. Shade 29 is a lovely gold for the metallic look. You can either just use it for a light hint of colour, or apply more coats and create a dynamic effect.

They also do a special metallic range for £3 which is a pallet of 6 colours which can be applied wet or dry. This creates a multitude of looks available from one palate. For the money this is incredible value, and whats more I find the product excellent to use. Slowly I am joining the world of the converted as far as MUA is concerned. Prior to this weekend I refused to believe that for the price it could be a quality product. But now I can't recommend it enough especially for the metallic look this season.

These are my bet picks do far for the trend, keep your eye peeled no doubt I will be up dating this.

Making my own statement

I have always walked on the wild side of conformist, and this weekend I did the same with my nails. I have taken the idea of the statement nail and made it my own.

The reason for this was actually an accident, I had done some tester nail swatchs and by mistake it actually worked. I hve a different colour on each of the five nails from dark sparkly red through to gold foil. However as they are all on the spectrum of dark red to gold they kind of match. By pure fluke the gold foil is on my index finger, and the plainest amp red is on my thumb. Like I said it was only a tester on one hand as I was going to take it off yesterday, until mum commented how unusual yet pretty it looked. So last night I repeated it on the other hand.

Today I braved the world sporting my nails, off to church I went. Now let my explain my church is not of the radical side and I have caused many a grey hair with my tattoo and various piercings. Grante a few others of my generation hae tipped a nod at my bravery. Once there I waited for the usual looks of dissaproval or horror, but for once they didn't happen. Instead some people who were alive long enough to still claim they were horrified by Woodstock, were complimenting the pretty colours and unusual look. One person actually said she hadn't thought she could get away with the foil look till she saw it on my nail.

Granted this look didn't make my normal rebellous statement to the more puritain of my church, but instead it probably  opened the doors to some whom fashion terrifies them. I am not saying I expect half the congregation to show up with red nail polish, heaven forbid, but it gave them food for thought. At the end of the day thats the whole point of fashion, whether it be clothes or make up or nails, it is to make your own statement.

Mision accomplished, now to the next stage.

L'Occitane Angelica range

I know I touched on this when I did the review of the L'Occitane evening, but I don't feel I did the range justice in a paragraph. Especially as my idea of a face routine depends on what mood I am in. I know I should cleanse, tone and moisturise religiously, but I forget. This and the medication I am on is a death sentence at times for my skin especially in the winter. So I went on a deliberate mission to correct this, count it as my 40th birthday resolution.

So with that said I took some considerable time out at the L'Occitane event seeking advice on what was best for my skin. based on the damage my medicines have done to it. At this type of event I was expecting the hard sell on the most expensive range. But no I got a genuine consultation. Like I said I got a trial on the shea butter range fist of all, but within minutes of trying the cleansing washing it was very obvious it wasn't the right range for my skin at the moment, I say at the moment because as I was clearly advised every ones skin needs changed depending on season, age, health and so on.

Instead of making a big deal about the failure of one range, my adviser quickly apologised and we move on to the angelica range. The moment the cleansing wash was used on my skin it felt right. It was good at the cleansing part but didn't leave my skin with that over dried out feeling. The smell was different, but light and fresh. Its called a cleansing gel and costs £16, well worth the money.

Then the toner was applies, again it wasn't drying or harsh on my skin. Instead it seemed to just reduced the open pores. It was the first toner ever on my skin that didn't sting when I used it, apparently toners aren't meant to sting , but I never knew that till the adviser explained it all. Toner is £16 as well which I think is reasonable.

After this my face got sprayed with the hydration spray, which apparently can also be used to set make up in place. I have never rated hydration sprays much as I thought it was just an expensive way to buy water sprays. I now stand corrected, applied correctly hydration sprays to help correct a look and my eye make up made no bid for freedom, not even my eyeliner which usually ends up bleeding everywhere. I wouldn't say I am totally converted, but I will take it into consideration and may end up buying it at a later date. At £15 I am still not totally convinced I have to have it urgently.

The last thing applied to my now glowing skin was the ultra Matt lotion at £26. Now this I am totally convinced about. I have a tendency to shine for want of a better way of putting it. Although my skin is dry, it tends to look oily after the cleansing and toning, yet a small amount of this potion and my skin looked not dry but a healthy velvety texture. Or as my delightfully put it, more healthy than it has in the last 15 years. If there is a skin miracle for me, it is this, stuff BB creams this little jar literally removes 10 years from my skin and improves my confidence as much. Never I have I been so impressed by a skin product as I was with this, so much so I am counting the days till I go back and buy more.

Considering prior to that night I was looking at paying £56 for the Divine cream by L'occitane in the vague hope of looking normal, and that was without the cleanser and toner, I found the whole consultation not only educational, but a great relief to my battered bank account. Even if I bought the whole range in one go I would only be £71 the poorer and guaranteed a healthy looking face, instead of double that amount and no guaranteed result.

Skin care isn't something you can take lightly, I know that now, but it is worth seeking proper help. There is just too much choice on the market. I am sticking with L'Occitane out of personal choice, I prefer the more natural products on my skin, but even if you have a different company your prefer, they should still be able to provide you with the same consultant. If you are prepared to be loyal to a company, they should at least take the time to make sure you are using the right product for your skin.

Its raining 3 4 2

We must be getting close to Christmas as when I paid a visit to town I found Superdrug have a 3 for 2 deal on most of their make up products. Yipee, was the words passing my lips and in I headed. All the way through I did keep reminding myself I was on a present shopping mission, but some how I did managed to wrangle 4 new nail polishes and a black eyeliner for myself. Here is a run down of the 4 nail colours I just ended up with.

The first one I just had to have was the Barry M pink silver glitter. I have only done a swatch of this but the effects straight on to the plain nail is impressive. Yes as a plain polish or even jazzing up over another coat, it will need a top coat of  clear polish to make the nail smooth. But it is a good little glitter. Personally I like it as a colour on it's own as two coats make a dense enough colour. It is £3.99 on its own and that is a good buy so with this offer of 3 for the price of 2 its even better.

Staying with Barry M I finally got the gold foil effect  nail polish. I he been wanting this one for months and I wasn't disappointed. One piece of wisdom I have found when using this though, make sure your nail is fully filed and buffed as the colour and effect is unforgiving on any chips or uneven nail ridges. At £3.99 I would have been happy to purchase this at full price and was planning to before this offer came out

My final Barry M choice was the chameleon pink. I am surprised just how much I like the colour untampered with. It is a good solid metallic like pink. when you apply clear polish on strategic point this turns to a similar style but purple. I am impressed with the result and ease of achieving this effect. Some much so I would recommend it to any newbie in the nail effects range. Just bear in mind this colour is not shiny but a more muted matt colour. Again it was £3.99, and although I like the colour I do believe there are better on the market than this, but still good price to learn on.

My last choice of today's purchases is pink spice from the Accesorize range. This has a lovely sheen to it with the 3d effect of  glitter polish. It doesn't however need the top coat to make it smooth to wear. The gold in the colour is tasteful, without being over powering. I have to admit out of all the days purchases for myself it is the one I am most pleased with. This was £3.45 and having never used this range I am more than impressed.

The sale is on till 4th of December and if you know what you like and have a Superdrug beauty card delivery is free on line. I know I am already debating buying a few more from the accessorize range. But it is worth a look as it covers all the big names including Rimmel, Max Factor and GOSH as well as cheaper ranges. Remember if ordering on line the cheapest is free, so if you want to mix your purchases it may be worth splitting your sales so you get the maximum off. This sale includes most of the items in the ranges not just nail polishes.

December magazine freebie alert

Along with the Glamour and other magazines offering freebies I stumbled across one other. Company magazine isn't usually on my reading list, but now I have time on my hands I thought I would give it a chance.

So on my daily hop (outing) I was surprised to see it came it with a choice of two nail polishes, either company vamp or company crimson, my choice was decided by the fact the W H Smiths I went to only had the crimson. It is from the Jessica range, a company I have as yet not heard of. So I had a quick look on the great world of cyber to find out it is an American base company, focusing mainly on nails. The costs on their site isn't to bad when you do the conversion to £s but I didn't check out the p&p charges .

That said the colour didn't come out quite the way I had hoped, it looked like blood red colour but when applied to my nail it had a deep pink tinge. After two coats it did have a high gloss on the colour, but the colour was so thin it still looks uneven and a third coat will be required to stop it seeming like a tinted sheen and make it more like a nail polish.

The magazine is £2 and that alone is worth the money, its nice to receive a freebie, but don't just buy it for the free nail polish.

Labeled or finally acknowledged

I promised I wouldn't post anything medical until I had some new to the mix. Well this morning I got the letter from the DLA, the decision on whether or not they accept the reports and write ups on my medical conditions. Prior to earlier this year I live a very independant life, but by August walking unaided became imposiable. Now if I try to move round the house without aids I end up doubled up. But because all my conditions are invisable from the outside, I was prepared for an endless battle to prove and admit to myself I need help.

Never have I been so nervous as opening the envelope when it arrived. At first I couldn't face reading more than the first two sentences, in fear of it saying I was rejected in my claim. Especially as I have managed to escape the dreaded DHSS medical. How ever the letter didn't have those fateful lines, instead it said I was recognised as needing mobility needs and some care needs. The relief was unbelievable, and I have to admit it took all day to truly sink in, that people believed me, and the doctors and consultants are on the same page as yourself.

To me it isn't about the money, although that will buy me some freedom, instead it actually will open doors for me. It means that should I make enough progress to return to work, which is my goal next year, I have a piece of paper telling employers that the conditions I have are real, and do genuinely affect me. This means that I not unemployable, but need acceptance to be employed.

I am not looking at this as a label or a dead end, but instead a freedom pass to return to the normal world. Sure there will be a fight at times, and some people are going to try and pigeon box me, but at the end of the day I am still the same person I was ten years ago, I just can't walk as easily or carry stuff. Being recognised as disabled ( how I hate that word) is no curse, it just means I do things differently. I still have a brain, a mouth and hands, a university education, and years of experience, so what changes. In my eyes nothing but the speed I get from a to b.

There is a lot to be said about that, but instead I will sum it up with an age old fable, I have gone from being the hare to the tortoise, and we all know who got there first!

A most excellent evening

I am finally home happy and exhausted. The Marie Claire / L'Occitane night was truly a brilliant evening and I can't recommend it enough. For a £10 ticket I have been made to feel worth a million. As regular readers will know I have a soft spot for this company, but tonight they went from a company I have a soft spot for to a company that truly values it customers.

You may or may not read about these evenings when they are offered in the fashion magazines. Where you buy a ticket and get a late night opening, with some offering treatments or discount shopping and maybe a token goody bag. Well I have never been to one and last month I spotted it in the magazine. So once I counted the beans so to speak I realised I could afford to go, and booked my ticket. After a very pleasant phone conversation I was informed as I was currently of limited mobility my mother come carer would be allowed to attend free of charge. Today was the all important day and after I made a courtesy call to confirm my attendance with mum, we set off to Clapham.

I was smart and planned our route to a tee including allowing extra time for me on my sticks, which turned out to be a good thing as one of my legs wasn't playing nice. Yet we still made the hour and half journey in time enough to allow me a tea stop at Mc Donald's before we went in. Tea drunk we were the 1st to arrive which wasn't a bad thing as the shop was a cosy size and it gave me a chance to hop around and have a good look.

There was I mission was on, I needed to get a person a Christmas present on a restricted budget. Before the crowds arrived I had in already got it down to a short list. That said I had also already also drunk the glass of complimentary wine, and begrudgingly turned down another  due to my medication. Although had I not been on tablets I would have happily accepted another it was a quality wine, as were the canapes on offer. From the moment I had walked in I had been made to feel special, nothing was too much trouble or effort for them, and mum was offered the same courtesy, being offered all the same refreshments as a paying ticket holder. Having made a couple enquires about my short list I knew what I wanted to buy. Even then there was no pressure for me to hurry up or spend more, instead I was offered a free hand treatment with two of their products which was delightful and relaxing.

Then when I was looking with mum at the new skin range I was offered a free consultation on skin care which I jumped at as my skin is trashed with all the medication. After talking to me about my skin problems the lady tried one product and then instantly change her mind after feeling my skin as she was applying. Instead then she changed the range trial and did a full routine on me, cleansing, toning, spritz then applying a day cream. I looked in the mirror and swore I had lost 10 years. But that was my bias opinion until mum said exactly the same thing. Needless to say I now have a very long shopping list for after Christmas and a completely different skin routine. After a good hour I made my purchase with the promised discount, and was given a few relevant samples, a gift card for myself for after Christmas. I was also given the advertised goodie bag and was I in for a shock.

I have experience with goodie bags from events like balls but never a fashion or style event, so this was virgin ground for me. Some how I managed to hold back until the two hour journey home had been made. Then the bag was opened. For a start it had more items than shown in the magazine and a couple had been substituted, for the better. The advert showed 3 items from the lavender range including a hard soap and 6 other items .When I opened it up for a start there were 10 items, yes there was one lavender item, a travel sized (75ml) body lotion which mum happily accepted for her effort. If she likes it she will be helping me spend in the new year. There were 2 items from the  Pioine Flora range (peony) a 75ml shower gel, and 75ml beauty milk. Then there was 35ml almond shower oil, 30ml Essential water from the Immortelle range an two 3ml samples again from the immortelle range, the precious cream in both day and night versions. Then there was the shea body 5% shower cream 75ml To finish with there were 2 hand products a verbena cooling hand gel 15ml and a cherry blossom hand cream again 15ml. The goody bag was said to contain travel sizes and they weren't skimping, I have seen smaller travel sized products in the shops to buy. Although the day and night creams were the smallest they still contain enough for probably a weeks use.

The items I was treated to in store were the lavender purifying hand gel £6.50, a very pleasant improvement to antibacterial hand gel, and the shea butter 15% hand cream at £8.50. With in 5 minutes I had hands worthy of a lady with no sign of hard skin caused by endless use of crutches. The hand gel was new to me and despite the fact you can pick up antibacterial gels a lot cheaper none will feel as nice on your skin. Like the hand creams there was no tacky feeling or residue.

My facial started with a shea cleansing milk £15, although this felt wonderful, it proved too rich an heavy for my skin at present. We moved on the Angelica range with a fantastic result, the cleansing gel £16, facial toner £16, hydration face mist £15 and finishing with the ultra matte fluid £24. I hadn't anything about this range but the results were by far the best I have come across. Even an unobservant husband noticed the result.

The evening was the best I have had in a long time, I left feeling like a princess and looking glowing. Now I can look forward to another trip to the shop knowing exactly what I want and not worrying about any after effects on my skin. The staff were beyond caring and a quality product was only surpassed by the quality staff.

Warm up post

Just an advanced warning I am off to the L'Occitane evening in Clapham tonight. As this is a new thing for me I am more than excited They have already seemed welcoming as they have offered my mum free entry as she is my carer and this is the first time since the Para Olympics I have braved a journey to town on public transport.

So expect a full run down tonight, with all the highs and hopefully no lows. Bus route is planned with plenty of give for traffic. Even the coffee stop is planned, so nothing has been left to chance. Ticket is in bag, and trainers are lined up.

I am off in the next hour and just can't wait, wish me luck.

That little luxury gift

We are all on that hunt at this time of year. That little stocking filler for a female relative or the every looming mystery Santa at the office. We have all been there done that, and how many times have we ended up grabbing the nearest soap set or bottle of plonk. Well this year I have a few ideas based on my own tastes, but it may be worth printing and leaving in an appropriate location for the more vague of males.

Starting with an all round luxury may I suggest Champaneys Miracle balm £5 and a real blessing.I came across it by accident when some one gave me a Champaneys hamper for Christmas a few years back. It is a helpful balm to carry around during the winter months for those little patches of dry or sore skin.

It can be used any where from face to elbows and knees, and at this price you can always just use it as a top up present, tree decoration or for a pocket money present. I was expecting to pay a lot more for this, the name speaks volumes.

Another pocket money price present is rimmels disco ball nail polish from £1.99. One of the many new glitter polishes on the market, the price bracket means it is affordable to all and will suit anyone from teen upward.  It is a sparkly over coat that can jazz up any colour nail polish. Its blue / silver effect is perfect for the winter wonderland look. There are plenty of these effects in many brands but for a gift no one would be upset to receive.

L'Occitane have several different ideas for these kind of gifts. My suggestions are the brightening Immortalle set at £20. Its a great little starter set including brightening cream, cleansing wash and face water is perfect for a younger person still installing a beauty regime.

The hand and lip buckets are brilliant, in several different aromas from shea to winter flowers to date. £16 is a more than reasonable price for the products and they are wrapping in a metal bucket for storage. I would definitely appreciate this as a gift from any. It is a perfect secret Santa gift.

For £20 you could also get either the shower quatro or the hand cream trio. Both safe bets for some one you don't know quite as well. They are fantastic little gifts that won't break the bank. I have seen soaps and other little bits from under a £10 on their web page as well so it is well worth a look as any order over £40 gets a free tote bag for the woman in your life.

The other website that is laden with little goodies is the Bayliss and Harding. There I found gifts from £3 for a sweet madarine hand lotion wrapped like a cracker. This would look fantastic hung from a tree or as a place setting. I know I have spotted some really nice gifts from Bayliss and Harding in my local supermarkets, but on the web site there are even more and free surprise gift for orders over £25. The site is easy to navigate as it is well labelled and the under £10 range is just as well presented as the £50 range. There is even a clearly labelled section so that the men in your life are just as catered for.

If like me you like to keep it seasonal there is an complete gingerbread range most under £20 including this little set for £15 which I think is a right little cracker I may have to buy for myself. It is 8 bottles, 2 of each ,100ml Sweet Gingerbread Body Wash, 100ml Chocolate Chip Shower Crème, 50ml Vanilla Frosting Body Lotion and 50ml Caramel Fudge Body Scrub You could buy this as one present or divide it up and sharing it in stockings in which case it would work out just pennies over £2 each.

After 5 minutes on the net I have also found lovely sets from Body Shop and Nails Inc under £20 that would make excellent secret Santa presents. Both also have items £11 and under that could be tucked in a stocking. It is worth looking and buying now as many of these sites are offering deals that could get you something either as a treat to yourself or extra in the present.

Hope these help the mass search as there is 6 weeks till Christmas Eve madness.

Pain patches and pills

I know I haven't posted much about whats really happening in the progress of my health. Mainly for two reasons, 1) I was in danger of boring everyone to death with it, and 2) I am still getting used to various changes.

I have had pain patches added to my collection of pills and potions to lower the chronic pain so that when I start physio I can bear the pain. Well the good news is they are working they are genuinely lowering the day to day agony to something more livable. But with the sugar comes some salt and I am not talking about the constant sensation in my mouth.

It would be better to ask this question, how hard is it to keep a plaster stuck to you for 7 days? Very hard is the answer. These things just won't stay stuck more than 5 days. It doesn't matter what I do where i stick it (upper body only according to the instructions). They just come unstuck. I have tried using various tapes when they start to give, nope that just makes it worse. We are now on some kind of surgical clingfilm/ second skin, stuff, But that is too small to use just one to cover the whole plaster so at the moment I am sporting one pain patch covered with two of these other dressings and praying that they stay put till next Sunday.

Trust me, tattoos are a whole lot easier to deal with than this. To be honest on these tablets would be the ideal time to have another tat as I wouldn't feel anything between the dormant pain and the pain killers. As soon as I can earn my own money again that's what I am doing, treating myself to a survivor tattoo. That will give me a chance to choose between the 3 I have in mind. A grapevine over the ball of my foot, a dragon on lower back or an original my niece has on my hip. I have one simple rule will tattoos, they must not be visible in an evening dress or office work clothes. Not because I don't like the sight of them, it is just I have them done for me and no one else.

Anyway I transgress, back to the medication. I am no longer having back spasms every other day, we are now down to one or two a week. But I am still unable to hold myself up right for more than a couple of minutes. Instead it is a choice between relying on my sticks or ending up at a 45 degree angle. But I now on a count down to physio which is standing at 25 days to go. Then it is assessment day, from then we will have a better idea of what is treatable and what isn't.

So from now till then I probably won't blog about it until the 7th Dec, unless we have a major issue. Till then I hope you enjoy the rest of my blog.

More Kandee

So Kandee held back on us and there are few more treats in this latest collection. Two I personally love and two are less my taste but I know others who will love them. Anyway lets have a look.

I just love this the Cinder pump. very like the Glace pump already released. But I actually prefer these over the Glace, there is just something more wearable in these. I think it is the colour just goes with so much more in my wardrobe. I still love the Glace but if I had to choose between them then the Cinder will win. I just love the subtle mute gold colour, and the contrast between matted texture and then the sheen of the colour on the platform and heels. They are just perfect for the festive season what ever your LBD looks like.

Then we have Ribes a purple version of the winter boot design. I don't know why but this just doesn't rock it for me. The only one in this style I really love is the After Eight. I think it is purely  colour issue though, I am just not a purple person. As a winter party boot, this does have everything going for it, just not for me. I just think the platform is highlighted by the colour and that's not my thing. That said I can imagine this one being very popular . With the right outfit and the personality to match this boot could just rock an outfit and make the perfect Kandee statement.

Peanut Crunchy was a complete surprise in this range. Although as Caramel Crunch has already sold out in certain sizes, it is probably a smart move.  The Peanut range in bang on it, in regards to the animal prints that have been around for the last few seasons, and seem to be as popular in the Kandee range. The Peanut Crunchy is a boot with real attitude and is as edgy as they come especially in this seasons Kandee range. I admire the way they have mixed the pattern with the studs, and the fact it makes it a statement piece. I would definitely say this is the statement shoe of the collection.

Finally we have Galaxy, and I have to admit I didn't need to take a second look to fall in love with them. The same red colour as the Glace but like the Verdi with no platform. For me the ideal combination. It has that red slipper feel from the wizard of oz, and gives every girl the chance to feel like Dorothy when she wears them. For me love at first sight. After all every girl has the right to dream do they?

Me Me Me

No I am not turning narcissistic on you its the brand of make up I have been coming aware of over the last two years and loving.

I came across it by accident when choosing a present for a friend. being a good friend I never give anything I don't like myself so I bought a trial box myself. I started with the rouge set as I have an inner doll in me at times at love the chance to trial it out. It was a 3 piece set that consisted of a dark blood red nail polish, a blush and a lip gloss. On first opening I was impressed with the stylish box that is study yet feminine. This blush was surprisingly easy to use and not over do, this was refreshing as I find blush the hardest thing to use and often end up looking like a reminder of the 80's. The nail polish was pleasant enough  ( although nothing will touch Nails Inc for me). It worked well after two coats and I did love the colour. The winner overall was the lip gloss, it was a strong striking colour easy to apply. It also has a little trick to it, a little light that clicks on when you open it up. As you apply the gloss even in the darkest room the light in the cap makes it easy to see what you are doing. Needless to say friend got this as well as a present.

The next thing I bought was the nail pamper kit as I not good on having plain neutral colours in my collection. This has every thing for the basic manicure look. Two polishes one baby pink the other white, a top coat, file, buffer and hand cream. Again it was an excellent purchase an came in a stunning box, and again I got a second set as a present.

Since then I have also bought the first set in the pink range for a lighter more day time look and wasn't disappoint either. Especially as these sets come in comfortably under £20 most under £15, yet look far more expensive and make excellent presents. As yet I have had no complaints from the recipients.

Then I found my final purchase to date the little angels set. I was slightly disappointed it came in a cheaper package, but it has highlighters and check tints, that are almost as good as my favourite benefit ones. I was very happy with these as a little went a long way so they are excellent value for money. There are 4 colours two pinkish based, two golden. The first one is  Poppy tint, the paler of the two pinks. Depending how much you use or blend in you can achieve an almost not there look to a light bubble gum colour. The other pink is Pussy Cat which gives you a clue, it is a strong pink colour that can create almost a doll like colour on you. The two highlighters are Sun beam and Moon beam. Sun beam is more pink pale gold for day time and then moon beam is the stronger gold tint for night time. I have just fallen in love with these four tints and I can see these being bought as presents this year although I do think they may end up re packaged.

So now I am waiting for my next inspiration from their collection and can't wait to see what they bring out next, MeMeMe certainly is a brand to look out for.

Make your poppy count

Today belongs to the servicemen past, preent and future, who protect us and enable us to live in freedom. For this reason even Twitter and Facebook campaigned for the 2 minutes silence to be obsevered and near enough achieved it. Just wish all the TV channels would be so concenous!

That said, we wear the poppies so we don't forget! So come the end of the day, don't just un pin your poppy till next year, instead forget to take it of, because these people work 365 days a year and at least deserve little bit of our attention. I am deliberatly not taking the poppy off my icon on either Facebook and Twitter, for this same reason.

For those more moved to do more, check out some of the twitter pages of our forces, you will find you can send a general or personal lettter to a memeber of the forces and even donate a parcel so one of them can have Christmas. even if you can't afford to donate a whole parcel they take monetary gifts to donate towards one.

What ever you do please don't forget, they never forget us.

Sample review Dr Organic

To kill my invalid boredom, I signed up for beauty selection, which will send me samples every few weeks. So I thought I would start trying them out and giving you all my run down of pros and con's.

The 1st to be tried and tested is the Dr Organic Rose Otto Skin Lotion. This is part of a bigger range and one I had not heard of so I was keen to try it. The sample was plentiful  and on reading the ingredients on the back it was all items I could pronounce and recognise. There wasn't a chemical compound in sight. Things like Shea butter and chamomile extract were all very promising.

So after a long warm bath I applied liberally as directed. The first thing I noticed was the overwhelming scent of rose. By over whelming, I mean almost nauseating, I am not over keen on rose scent except on the flowers themselves, but this was so concentrated it didn't just scent me it filled the entire room and leaves a lingering aroma where ever I walk. Then I found it didn't absorb as I would like instead it seemed set on buffering my skin and rubbing off.

It promises to moisturise, but in some patches it left my skin drier than before, that my be the use of clove oil. It also created a slight burning  / warming sensation that is a little harsh for my skin. A bit like the effects of tiger balm on the skin. Great if you want tiger balm, not if you want a skin lotion. There are plenty of soothing extracts in this cream including aloe vera, Irish moss and coco butter, but they seem to be out weighted by clove oil, liquorice extract and lime flower extract.

As you can tell by this write up I am more than disappointed with the sample. It had all the possibilities of having a new convert and instead I am still trying to dilute the aroma around me. I think for  those who love the rose scent and have less sensitive skin it would probably be more successful. The cost is around £7.19 and as it 100% natural that is quite reasonable on the market. It just not for me.

Realistic Fashion

I had just got my hands on the new edition of Marie Claire, and having flicked through it I am already realising how much of it is unreachable for the average lady.

Sure we all like to look at the pretty dresses and the matching make up. But in reality with the lack of funds available to most, most of these looks are nothing more than a dream, or are they? Yes we have all heard of the must have 99p dress that was on the market, but even if you are the right size finding one is like gold dust. So now the big stores like Asda and M&S have brought out their own ranges  which include dresses under £20. Again nice idea, and most of these do go up to more realistic sizes.

But do we all really need a new dress for one day or evening, to then resign it to the back of a wardrobe. Having just gone through my collection of dresses, I have found at least 6 versions of the LBD, every thing from vintage to crushed velvet full length cocktail. The later over 15 years old and the diamante straps being the only thing showing its age. So I have decided this year is the year of revamping. The fore mentioned dress is heading for a strap replacement. The silver with white stones I being carefully un stitched and once I have found the the right store replaced with gold metal an hopefully red stones. The stitching itself will take at most an hour and that is the dress revived. If I am able to find it I may also buy a matching crystal embellishment for the top of the split giving the dress a whole new life.

You may find find a similar find in the back of your wardrobe a dress that can be revived for minimal cost and become an original piece. If you are too worried about ruining an old dress with memories attached, have a look in the local charity shop. I have been shopping around and it pays to. Certain shops hae got wise to the retro trend and hae upped their prices so that they are no longer the bargains they once were. But the less more local based charities are more keen to get the turn over of stock and money. In many local shops I have come across a plain black dress at £5, in many sizes. Some of these same shops stock basic haberdashery products like glue on embellishments or strips of sequins for under £2. With a little bit of time and care you will have an original piece. Just remember lighter weight fabrics need more delicate work and are often best to use fabric glue rather than fine stitching.

That could give you a fresh look with maybe only the expense of shoes and a bag. And to be honest even a bag can be revived with the right skill. But not worth doing to any thing other than the cheapest of bags. No one wants to see a designer bag ruined that would be sacrilege. But those cheaper bags that you have hidden at the back of a cupboard they can take it.

The rest of the outfit well that's where your magazines can really help you out. Look at the new styles and colours of make up and hair then adapt to suit you. I am loving the dark vampish look that's about with  the deep berry lips although I am never brave enough to do the two together, It is like the legs and cleavage look I always do one or the other, so the same applies to lips or eyes never both. My pale skin just won't stand both.

As to the rest of the look well I leave you on your own for that. But think about it isn't it cheaper to revamp than to buy new?

Body Butter .. my top picks

Body butters tend to be a seasonal love for me. It is rare for me to use them in the summer as I prefer something lighter to keep my skin soft, come the cold weather out come the body butters. There is something luxurious about smothering my skin in a heady scent of spice or fruit. Unfortunately this season I am struggling to find my all time favourite the n-spa range of vanilla bruelle, chocolate orange, gingerbread and hot butter fudge, I just hope they aren't discontinued especially as I am as addicted to their matching bath syrups as well.

In the meantime I will give you the run down of my other favourites starting with body shop. Now they have a range for every taste and price although I feel their full size prices are reasonable to start with. If I do break trend and use these in the summer time I like either the Moringa or the lemon, both of which I got in a set of 3 travel size (50ml) for £12.

In the winter I am definitely a more sensuous person and love more seasonal scents heavy with cinnamon and ginger. So the ginger sparkle body butter is my ideal choice. It comes in a ginger set for £15 which includes Shower gel, body butter, soap and body scrub in a delightful tin. If you want to go the full hog there is also a hand cream in a festive set for £12. Or if you just want a full size body butter it is £13. I have a really fondness for gingerbread fragrance as it just puts me in that happy homely sense of mind.

If you are a more fruit based person you can't go far wrong with the the cranberry range. although personally I prefer the more heady vanilla. Body shop do a couple of versions of vanilla body butters There is their duo which is half filled with vanilla and half with chocolate. It is nice and lovely for those with a sweet nose. My personal favourite has to be the vanilla bliss though. It fills the room with those comforting scents, like  a giant fluffy towel to be wrapped up in. gain it is £13 for a full size pot, and there is a full seasonal range including everything from lip balm, to shower gel right through to reed diffuser.

My final choice is again body shop but not so seasonal. It is their Dream time. It is the perfect body butter to use to unwind after the stress of a heavy day or long office party. With a hint of lavender and chamomile it is the perfect after bath addition to guarantee a good peaceful nights sleep. Although I have to admit I nearly over looked it but for a freebie earlier in the year in a magazine. I used it after a handful of restless nights and found it really helped me relax as it was such a delicate fragrance.

All the more recent body butters are softer than the body shop of old I remember, when they were so firm it was hard to get out the pot. These are more cream like in texture and the scents are divine. My advise is try a travel size or selection pack first if in doubt as every one has a a different nose. At the moment Body Shop is offering several gift sets including a variety of body butters for £15 in the shape of a lollipop.

As I try to hunt down my n-spa favourites these are certainly filling the gap though. But it won't stop me looking.

Head wall bang

You know when you are having just one of those days where nothing you do is going to go to plan. Yes? well mine is one of them. I won't go into it all but just one part of it as if I told you all of it I will still be typing this post next week.

So I had my monthly check in with my GP booked at 2.20, being the good little patient I am I arrived 5 minutes early, thinking he wouldn't be running late two patients in on the afternoon surgery. Yea right! I arrived to the receptionist saying "do you have to see this doctor or would you be happy with another one?" Now if I had phoned as an emergency patient I would been happy to see any old doctor but I booked this appointment a week ago as my monthly review. More importantly this doctor is the one managing my chronic illness and its affects not just on me but the whole family. So naturally I said I would wait till he was free thinking he was running his normal late self. Not that I mind as he is usually running late because he actually cares about his patients and takes time to find out what is really ill.

However an hour later I was really unimpressed when no one had told me what the delay was and to be honest I find sitting in the surgery chairs really painful. It was only when I was in agony I was told the poor doctor had a random review, something all GPs are likely to get, to check they are not becoming the next Dr Shipman. Fine so they have to have these checks, but would it be asking too much to inform the poor waiting patients. Had we known this mum would have left me there and gone to do the shopping instead of sitting there like a class A lemon. Over an hour and 15 minutes later I arrive at my doctors room, him harassed, me exhausted and in agony.

What ever I may say my GP couldn't have been kinder and more apologetic about the wait. He understood I couldn't just see anyone as my combination of medicine is finely tuned and most unusual, but it is a combination that works and causes the least amount of side affects. Any other GP would want me to change this combination based on the addiction risk.. But I have already been through so many risk assessments, psych tests and do on. We have also spent the last 8 months tweaking the dosage and timing of the doses. So the last thing I want to have to do is spend 13 of my allocated 15mins explaining all this to some one else. As it was I had a list of things to whip through not just with my normal issues but other things as I have had a head cold for the last two weeks that has kindly set off my old ear condition and left me with a cold sore that won't shift. Needless to say I left with a book of prescriptions ( only half of my monthly requirements as the other half doesn't need monthly reviews).

Once done there off to the chemist to collect this shopping bag of pills and potions. Problems there? You bet! One prescription got refused as it is an controlled substance and my GP said use as directed not explained the directions. So back to the GP to change prescription and then back to chemist. One bag of prescriptions later and still no pain patches, apparently they are so controlled they have to order them in from the hospital so I now have to wait till Monday for them, good job I have a spare one!

Estimated time to do this whole outing 1 hour and then we were meant to go do the weekly shop. Reality of trip 3 hours and total exhaustion, so shopping is now postponed till early tomorrow.

That is just this afternoon so you can guess how this morning went!

Seasonal Charity.. how we can do our part

We as a family have had a hard year, mainly due to my illness rendering me unfit for work. It means that this years Christmas is going to be on a budget. Like so many in the country this year times are tight and there is little left to throw away on trivial gifts.

That said we are already planning and scheming as to how to make the time special for us all, family and close friends who have been so generous over the year. Gifts will be more thoughtful rather than excessive luxuries. That said my heart is always drawn to those even less fortunate that ourselves. The reason I start now is due to the fact that it is Remembrance Sunday this week, that always symbolises the start of the festive to myself. For me the whole festive season is about not personal gain but we can do for others.

So the little change I had the other day went straight in to the poppy tin, even if like me you are predominately a pacifist, it doesn't mean you can't support our armed forces. I personally believe every one in the western world owes our freedom to the constant vigilance of these forces and owe them all you can spare.

From there on in right through to the new year, I will be as generous as finances allow to the charities I support, as they do so much unseen and unrecognised work for all those in need. After all in this day and age you never know when you may need the support of one them. I am less able than I was to give and do as much as I once could and in a way I feel really bad for this. But any thing I can do I would whether it be help a friend or a tin of veg to harvest festival, it all helps.

You may ask why am I on about this now, so early to the festive season, well there are two reasons. The first is this weekend, Remembrance day, we all need to do our bit as it is this countries young men and women who are out in the world risking and unfortunately in some cases losing their lives defending our freedom. So there is no reason why any one of can't spend those very minutes in silence acknowledging this fact. The other is think when you buy your presents, think, can you get anything via charity websites even if it is only the Christmas cards. This gesture alone would help raise much needed funds.

That's a big ask I know, but an email today which I won't go into reminded me just how kind the human spirit can be over this time of year. To the person who sent the offer I can not find the words to thank them, but what I can do is pass on the spirit of giving and generosity.

The hunt for a perfect eyeliner

For the 25 years I have worn eye liner I have forever hunted for the perfect eye liner. It has been an endless search which for many years I was destined to lose. Until recently I have a few that solve my problem with out scratching my skin or causing them to water so it ends up in a total mess. Here are my top picks.

Miners Phat liner in black is a great pencil. It is soft to use and creates a stunning affects. I remember Miners as a brand my mother used in the 60's and it kind of fell out of favour in the 80's. I can across this in my families Kleeneze catalogue and thought I would give it a try. It was a smart move for a smart price. £3.99 is a good price and for the money good value, it is going to take a while for me to use this up.

The Miners brand is still mainly out of favour but it is worth another look, think of it as going retro.

My next choice is Avon's glimmer stick. I have these in several colours and find them ideal for life on on the go. No need to sharpen just twist and go. It is very soft to use and no chance of scratching as there is no wood surround. It is hard to get a thick line but for the more delicate and accurate detail it is ideal. There is a variety of colours from the normal black and brown, to steely silver. It is worth looking at the seasonal additions as well, and the diamonds variations.

The price is £6 which is still a reasonable price, but being Avon you can often pick up offers like the current one which is 2 for £8

Still with Avon in the In a blink stick. It combines eyeliner at one end an eyeshadow that the other. At £6.50 it is great value for money and to do a quick change from morning to evening . It comes in a variety of shades and yet takes up the space of a pencil in your make up bag. The eye shadows compliment the eyeliner, I personally love the silver shadow with the steely grey liner for parties.

The Green one shown here has a striking effect if you have blue eyes like myself as it is such a deep green. This is well worth a try for the money and I would highly recommend it to anyone with a busy life. I haven't seen this in any of the major brands for some reason but think they are missing a trick not bringing out their own version.

This are my favourite 3, but even still I am still on the look out for something new, softer and better. I never thought it would be so hard to find the perfect eyeliner, yet to me it is the core essential to any look. Without the right kind of eyeliner you can lose the shape and effect of style you are trying to achieve. With so many products on the markets it is a case of too much choice not enough variety.
