Happy Halloween
So it's pumpkin night again, and I am hobbling against time.I need to make sure that the porch is decorated and sign made to point out where the candy is so we aren't bothered all evening by knocks at the door.
It is not because we are anti Halloween or anything, but it winds the dogs up and then the cats escape. Which is a major hassle as there are also fire works at some Halloween party's which scare the life out of the animals. So we have a system of decorating the porch and filling a bowl with wrapped treats so that the children still get a treat for their efforts. I would love to see the decorated children and share their party spirit, but practically that is impossible.
Halloween when I was a child was far more conservative and less candy orientated. In someways I miss that as we learnt about the really history of the day, but in other ways it is more fun for young and old alike. I would love to run around dressed as something weird with a party of children all on a sugar high. Some times in this day and age we need the chance to be something we are not for an evening. I always think back to an early Buffy episode, where they cover this whole point. Every one becomes something they aren't and the repercussions. But everyone deserves the night to try it out. Over the years I have been various witch's, a black cat a couple of times, but the best one was the fallen angel at a church Halloween party. Sure it cause chaos for days after as at one point I was on the church wall rallying the invited children into the party and some locals took offence. But it was a simple costume that I had a lot of fun with. Although why my outfit caused more offence than the scout leader as a devil I will never know, but hey that's the world we live in. I think it was more important to let the children have a fun evening in a safe environment than run around unsupervised.
Besides that evening those children also found out about the balance to Halloween being All saints day the next day. It was odd actually how many young people no longer know Halloween as All Souls day and it is the day all lost spirits get a night on earth, and that the following night All Saints day is when the champion spirits restore the balance. It is all fundamentally a Christian holiday, yet so many Christians now repel it through their own lack of knowledge.
Anyway I am not going to ruin what is basically now a fun day for children with way too much sugar, and my pumpkin isn't going to decorate itself. So Happy Halloween one and all.
